SUMMARY:"Tales from the cold—metabolic adaptations that promote thermogenesis" - Faculty Research Seminar - Claudio Villanueva\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:UCLA Molecular Biology Institute \nTuesday Faculty Research Seminar Series \n“Tales from the cold—metabolic adaptations that promote thermogenesis” \nFor Faculty Only \nZOOM – Please contact Nadia for Zoom information \nContact: Nadia Avila—mbiasst@lifesci.ucla.edu \nAbstract: How do endotherms generate heat in response to the cold? One mechanism is through non-shivering thermogenesis in brown and beige fat cells. Out lab is interested in understanding the transcriptional pathways that govern metabolic control to drive thermogenesis. The metabolic mechanisms that promote thermogenesis in brown fat relies in part on internal and peripheral sources of energy. Metabolomic and gene expression analysis during cold exposure suggest a reliance on pyruvate and lipid metabolism. Here we will discuss the metabolic adaptations that mammals undertake to respond to the cold and how activating these pathways may be used to treat metabolic disorders like diabetes.

SUMMARY:Professor Gina Poe - Multiverse: Your Brain on Sleep
DESCRIPTION:Multiverse is an interdisciplinary concert and event series combining music and science in live performance. \nNote: This event requires registration. Please visit this link (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/multiverse-your-brain-on-sleep-tickets-112503019560) to register. \n\n\nCapacity Notes: Space in the Zoom Webinar is limited. Attendees are advised to register only for as many tickets as devices they will be using. (e.g. a household of 3 people using 1 computer for the event need only reserve 1 ticket.)\n\n\nThis program is recommended for ages 18+. \nMultiverse is an interdisciplinary concert and event series combining music and science in live performance. After a sold-out smash performance of Hidden Worlds at the Charles Hayden Planetarium last fall\, and a groundbreaking digital concert of Unfolding Life this summer\, the Museum of Science teams up with Multiverse once again for a new virtual event this August! \nHave you ever wondered why we sleep? The role of sleep may be more complex than we think. Join neuroscientist Dr. Gina Poe of UCLA to discover how sleep is critical for remembering and forgetting memories\, cementing and healing trauma\, and influencing and responding to hormones. Explore the science with us through evocative discussion\, immersive music and live dance. \nExperience Multiverse in your homes for one night only. \nScientist: Gina Poe \nPerformers: Matt Sharrock\, Marimba; Megan Anderson & Haley Day\, Dance; The Table Manners\, DJs \nMusic by: Errollyn Wallen\, David Ibbett\, I Monster \nThis program is free thanks to the generosity of the Lowell Institute. \nPlease consider making a gift to support #MOSatHome at donate.mos.org/mosathome and become a vital partner in helping us provide access to free STEM experiences online.
