SUMMARY:College of Letters and Science Commencement Celebration 2020
DESCRIPTION:(updated Thursday\, May 14\, 2020) \nThe UCLA College will host a Virtual Celebration on this website for our centennial graduates at 3:00 p.m.\, PDT\, on June 12\, 2020\, featuring an address from actor\, social justice activist\, bestselling author\, and social media star George Takei. The Virtual Celebration is the launch of the Class of 2020’s recognition for their accomplishments\, which will culminate with an in-person event during the 2020-21 academic year when it is safe again to gather. The College has worked with graduating students to craft the virtual event\, which will celebrate the end of the academic year and the conferral of degrees for this year’s centennial class. The program will include remarks by Chancellor Block\, George Takei\, a Class of 2020 student speaker\, and others. More details are available on the official press release. \nIn the meantime\, we are inviting the College’s Class of 2020 to participate in an opportunity to be recognized individually on the College website as part of our virtual celebration. \nDuring the week of May 11\, 2020\, watch for an email message from the following address: classof2020@college.ucla.edu. That message will explain how you can personalize a web slide that will appear on this page June 12th to recognize your accomplishments at UCLA. \nMarchingOrder\, the company creating these slides\, will provide you with instructions for how to access their system to post a photo of yourself that will be displayed on the web slide\, along with a message that will be printed alongside your name\, major(s)\, degree(s)\, and honors. When your slide appears on the College Commencement website\, visitors on June 12th will be able to click on the slide to hear a recording of your name being read. \nIf you access the system before May 20\, 2020\, you will be able to record your own voice pronouncing your name\, as guidance for the professional announcer who will be recording your slide. You will also be able to type into the system phonetic directions for the announcer. Your name on the slide will be read whether you provide this guidance for the announcer by May 20th or not. \nYou will have until May 30\, 2020\, to post your photo and enter your message. For example\, this message could offer thanks to those who have supported you during your studies as a Bruin\, or it could highlight an activity or campus event that’s most important to you. The College will review all photos and messages posted on the slides\, to be sure they adhere to the spirit of the occasion and are appropriate for publication on this website. If you choose not to add a photo or a message\, your slide will include only your name\, your major(s)\, your degree(s)\, and your honors. \nThese slides will be created for all eligible members of the College’s Class of 2020 who set their privacy options to grant permission for their information to be included in commencement publications\, such as the Commencement program (which will be printed at a future date). \nIf you think you should be included in the web slides but did not receive a message with instructions\, please check your spam folder. It might also be because you need to adjust your privacy options to allow this publication to occur (instructions are here). If your privacy options are set correctly and you still have not been contacted by Monday\, May 18th with an email about how to participate in the slides\, please contact us at the Message Center for Student Questions. If\, for any reason\, you do not wish to have your slide appear on this website\, please opt out by clicking this link and registering your decision.

SUMMARY:How Does Music Change Your Brain?
DESCRIPTION:How Does Music Change Your Brain \nModerated by Elise Hu\, International Correspondent\, NPR \nA quarter century ago\, neurologist Oliver Sacks wrote of a young patient whose brain tumor appeared to have cost him his memory–until the music of his favorite group\, the Grateful Dead\, broght him back to reality. Today\, scholars in the field of neuromusicology suggest that music can be a tool to improve our brains–helping children develop faster\, improving the performance of athletes and computer programmers\, and even reducing the number of mistakes made by physicians. What does listening to or making music do to the different parts of our brains and the chemicals that help us think? And what potential does music have as a treatment for conditions from anxiety to Alzheimer’s? Songwriter and actress Mary Steenburgen\, research psychologist Assal Habibi\, and Mark Tramo\, neuroscientist and director of the Institute for Music & Brain Science\, visit Zócalo to explore how music transforms our brains.
