SUMMARY:Looking for Memory Outside the Brain
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology \ninvites you to a special virtual event\nLooking for Memory Outside the Brain \na conversation featuring \nDavid L. Glanzman\, Ph.D.\nDistinguished Professor\, UCLA Integrative Biology and Physiology\nProfessor\, Neurobiology\, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA \nMichael Levin\, Ph.D.\nVannevar Bush Distinguished Professor\, Biology\, and\nDirector\, Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University\nAssociate Faculty\, Wyss Institute\, Harvard University \nColeen T. Murphy\, Ph.D.\nJames A. Elkins\, Jr. Professor in the Life Sciences\nProfessor\, Molecular Biology and the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics\nDirector\, Paul F. Glenn Laboratories for Aging Research\, Princeton University\nDirector\, Simons Foundation’s Collaboration on Plasticity and the Aging Brain \nintroduction by \nRachelle H. Crosbie\, Ph.D.\nChair and Professor\, UCLA Integrative Biology and Physiology\nProfessor\, Neurology\, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA\nMemory is commonly associated with brain activity\, but recent evidence indicates that memory can be expressed by single cells\, inherited\, and possibly encoded by molecules. Three speakers will offer fresh perspectives on memory based on new research from their labs. Following these presentations\, attendees will be invited to ask questions of the speakers during a moderated Q&A.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, February 22\, 2023 \n5:00 – 6:00 p.m. PT \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar Registration\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology is focused on addressing the most pressing questions in physiology by harnessing our world-renowned expertise and highly collaborative spirit. We have strengths in developing cutting-edge computational and quantitative approaches that we apply to many physiological systems\, enabling discoveries in how molecules\, cells\, tissues and organisms solve the problem of biological communication\, which is essential for life. Our innovations in basic science research are fundamental to addressing human health and disease.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:UCLA Neurosurgery Casa Colina Lecture Series: Distinguished Professor Reggie Edgerton
DESCRIPTION:“Multiple mechanisms in play with spinal neuromodulation of sensorimotor dysfunctions” \nWednesday\, March 23\, from 7-8 AM. \nDr. Edgerton received his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Michigan State University\, Masters from University of Iowa and BS from East Carolina University. He is currently the Director of the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory and a Distinguished Professor of the Departments of Integrative Biology and Physiology\, Neurobiology\, and Neurosurgery. He has been teaching and conducting research at UCLA for over 50 years. His research is focused on how the neural networks in the lumbar spinal cord of mammals\, including humans\, regain control of standing\, stepping and voluntary control of fine movements after paralysis\, and how can these motor functions be modified by chronically imposing activity-dependent interventions after spinal cord injury. \nZoom Meeting ID: 922 5442 0305 \nDownload Flyer: \nUCLA-Casa Colina Virtual Lecture 3.23.22

The CNSI recently awarded Noble Fund grants to 10 interdisciplinary nanoscience research teams. \nDuring the virtual seminar series UCLA faculty members will offer brief presentations via Zoom on the work they are engaged in as part of the Noble Fund and how these efforts are impacting research for the greater good\, from research to advance computing\, human health and environmental sustainability. \nThe seminar series kicks off on September 30 with three Noble Fund presentations. Each presentation will be 15 minutes\, followed by discussion. \nThe talks will strive to: \n– Introduce the state of the field\n– Highlight key preliminary data\n– Provide an overview of the research\n– Identify potential opportunities for additional collaboration \nThe Noble Fund Seminar Series is free and open to the public. For more information\, please contact communications@cnsi.ucla.edu.

SUMMARY:Stephen Huston\, Ph.D. - "Turning vision in movement: Drosophila gaze-stabilization as a model for sensorimotor control"
DESCRIPTION:UCLA Integrative Biology & Physiology Presents:\n \nStephen Huston\, Ph.D. \n“Turning vision in movement: Drosophila gaze-stabilization as a model for sensorimotor control” \nHow does the brain generate behavior?  At its most basic level behavior arises from the complex interaction of the brain’s sensory and motor systems.  I will talk about my work to understand the neural basis of this interaction using fly gaze stabilization as a model system where we can perturb single\, identified neurons while the fly performs visually-guided behaviors.  I will discuss our findings on how information is transformed between sensory and motor neurons\, how motor neuron activity plays out through neural feedback loops to generate movements of the animal\, and how visual and proprioceptive inputs combine to enable the brain to choose amongst multiple different motor outputs. \nThursday\, June 3\, 2021 \n12 Noon \nVia Zoom \nMeeting ID: 944 3059 8494\nPasscode: 335115

DESCRIPTION:ART ARNOLD\, PhD\nDistinguished Professor\nUCLA\, Integrative Biology & Physiology \n“My Mouse Has a Sex Difference. Now What Do I Do?” \nFriday\, April 2\, 2021 – 12:00 p.m. \nFor zoom link and password\, please contact Catherine Weston (cweston@mednet.ucla.edu) \nAbstract:   \nThe NIH requires applicants to “consider sex as a biological variable (SABV) in the design and analysis of NIH-funded research involving animals and cells.” Yet\, many investigators are unaware of a conceptual framework for approaching the study of sex differences\, and of practical strategies to meet this requirement. This talk will consider these issues\, relevant to animal research. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:MBI Faculty Seminar: Pearl Quijada\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:“Coordination of endothelial cell maturation and patterning by the epicardium” \nThe coronary plexus arises from the integration of endothelial cells (ECs) with supportive mural cells and signals stemming from the epicardium. Synchronized with coronary remodeling\, the epicardium undergoes epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation (EMT); a process that regulates cell differentiation and growth factor secretion. Genetic mouse models with limited epicardial EMT have reduced subepicardial mesenchyme formation in addition to dysfunctional vasculature networks\, yet the mechanisms underlying this catastrophic phenotype are unknown. Our lab aims to identify the specialized epicardial cells guiding the specification of the coronary plexus. To achieve this goal\, we utilize cell-lineage tracing models coupled with the investigation of transcriptional programs from epicardial cells and ECs using single cell RNA sequencing. The epicardium’s role in facilitating arterio-venous specification is emerging as a novel mechanism to support regenerative-based medicine. Our essential goal is to identify fetal vascular guidance cues that may be harnessed for the development of therapies to treat vascular diseases. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://ucla.zoom.us/j/95104392930?pwd=UlluT0hacjRUb1NxVE41bjgrUDdRdz09 \nMeeting ID: 951 0439 2930\nPasscode: 299376
